or,even briefer: a guy existed in (what we now call) Turkey in 300 AD. Became a saint. Was linked to Christmas. In reformation, breaks with Catholic church created various interpretations of Saint Nicholas. The dutch had "sinterklaas". Americans mis-pronounced it as Santa Claus. Moore and Nast created the american St. Nick / Claus in 1800's and in 1930's-60's a coca-cola artist created the picture we now know.
