Lake Superior Brewing Company®, Duluth, Minnesota's only microbrewery, has been brewing high quality ales since 1994. A brief history/brewery information: Originally located in the Fitger's Brewery Shopping Complex, using dairy equipment, we began by brewing 6 barrel batches once a week on Sunday's in a 220 square foot area. Available in Duluth and Superior on draught only. 6 months later, we moved down the hall to a 900 square foot area and brewed 8 barrel batches upon demand. We also began packaging our beers in 2.25 gallon Party Pigs®.

Due to a continued increase in sales and demand for our beers in bottles, we moved yet again and settled in our present location in September 1998. Including office space we have 4500 square feet to work with. We have a 16 barrel steam jacketed brew kettle, 4 fermenters (still open fermenting in dairy tanks, hot/cold liquor tank, a chiller and a settling tank, filter, a new grain mill, two bright tanks and bottler.

We are the first commercial brewery in Duluth since 1972 when Fitger's stopped brewing operations. We offer free tours and enjoy giving them! Our tours are given by any one of the brewers or partners. We prefer weekday tours unless a large group when arrangements can be made. Free beer samples are given and our Highbridge Root Beer is available for the kids, non-imbibers or designated driver. Just give us a call (218-723-4000) or e-mail lsbrew@cpinternet.com and we will gladly set up a time.

All our beers are handcrafted in small batches using traditional methods. They are brewed using the finest ingredients: 100% malted barley, Lake Superior water, the freshest hops, and our own imported yeast selected to give our beers their unique flavor. All our beers are fresh and natural, so you can enjoy the fullest beer flavor.

As part of our expansion we opted
for a 16 barrel steam-jacketed kettle.
Double batches in our slow 8 barrel
direct-fired kettle were just becoming
too labor intensive.

We're still using 16 barrel dairy tanks for fermenters,
but since we have the larger kettle they don't take nearly as long to fill.

After boiling and fermenting, our beer finally makes it to our bright beer tanks where it is fined and carbonated before heading off to one of the many bars, restaurants, and liquor stores that carry our products.
